Macquarie University takes the pain out of pathology

Working closely with PHNs, researchers at Macquarie University have been able to provide a valuable overview of pathology testing in general practice. For instance, the median number of pathology requests is around 20 requests per 100 visits for a patient. The report highlights that of all pathology requests, 63.5% were completed, while at patient level, only 34.7% of patients completed all pathology requests ordered for them.

Strong relationships between project stakeholders have facilitated a bidirectional flow of information, enabling the direct translation of research to general practice.

The full report is available here.

The use of these results by PHNs in the design of quality improvement activities will impact on both GP test management and patient outcomes.
